FREE SCHOOL MEALS
Under new rules, families receiving Universal Credit/Qualifying Benefits now qualify for free school meals, regardless of their income. Because of this, benefits-based free school meals are now split into two categories:
- Targeted Free School Meals
- Who it is for: Families receiving Universal Credit/Qualifying Benefits with an annual household income of £7,400 or less.
- What you get: Your child receives a free school meal every day.
- Extra Benefits: This category automatically unlocks extra funding for our school pupil premium, which we use to provide your child with additional academic support. You will also receive help with school trips and your child will be entitled to free school milk.
- Expanded Free School Meals
- Who it is for: Families receiving Universal Credit/Qualifying Benefits with an annual household income above £7,400.
- What you get: Your child is now fully entitled to a free school meal every day.
- Please note: This new category covers the daily school meal only. It does not trigger additional school pupil premium funding, and your child will not be entitled to free school milk or help with school trips.
What about Universal Infant Free School Meals (UIFSM)?
Please remember that Universal Infant Free School Meals (UIFSM) is completely separate from the benefits system. By law, all children in Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 automatically receive free school meals, regardless of household income.
- Important Action: Even if your child automatically gets a free meal through UIFSM, please still apply for the benefits-based FSM if you receive Universal Credit/Qualifying Benefits. If you qualify under the targeted category, it ensures our school receives vital funding to support your child’s learning!
